Creating hexagons

I wanted to make hexagons but didn't want to purchase yet another ruler. I have so many 2.5" strips laying around and wanted to use them in a project. So I decided to test my hexagon theory. With my equilateral triangle ruler I cut a triangle first and then a coordinating hexagon from some extra 2.5" strips that I had. 

My ruler has marks in yellow for finished triangles and marks to the side for the width of strip. I have pointed out these marks below. Your ruler should have one of these marks on it.

Since 2.5" strips sewn together equal 4" I put my strip on the 4" finished 4.5" cut line to create coordinating hexagons for my triangles. when sewn together they make the perfect 4.5" unfinished  equilateral triangles.

I'm sure with a little configuring that you could do the same with other strip widths. This ruler goes up to 6" finished triangles so you could probably do 3.5" strip widths to make the maximum size triangle.

Chevron quilt

Finished! I started this project wanting to use up these fabrics, my stash has grown and it's time I whittle it down before I purchase new fabrics. I have some strips left from where I did not have enough of all four fabrics to make another round or set for more rows. This came from an Eleanor Burns Pattern Zig Zag. I just love her patterns so easy to follow and really this was fun and easy to put together. I was trying to make mine bigger more like a queen size and it did not work out.I got it about wide enough I just did not have enough for the length. I used roughly the equivalent of 2 jelly rolls for this quilt. I don't think I'll ever do that zig zag border at the top and bottom again; that was my idea and not part of Eleanor's pattern her version finishes much more simply.

Below is a closeup of that pesky border. mostly it was just very time consuming and the valley's were a bit tricky.

I quilted this on my machine at home using a chevron pattern.
