Quilty around the house

I'm so excited to share with you another Quilty around the House project!

This time I am working with Triangles! I was so excited and nervous all at the same time about this project. I knew this would be a good way to refresh myself on the basics of triangle assembly and to date probably the biggest finished triangle project I have completed. Also I finally cut into all these beautiful purple and grey batiks I have been hoarding

Below you can see I have my rows sewn but I still have to sew them to each other. This small project is going to be a runner for the top of my dresser in my dressing room so I only have 4 rows of triangles to assemble. This should go quickly and then I'm ready to quilt.

I want to make a queen size of this for our guest bedroom and I think this small project will help me with estimating how many triangles I need for each row and how many rows I will need. Also how many triangles am I able to get from each width of fabric strip. So I have some math and figuring to do. I'm so excited with how this looks so far that I can't hardly wait.

Quilty around the house

For this "Quilty Around the House" edition I wanted to share the table toppers that I'm working on for the end tables downstairs.

Originally when I was planning and cutting I was leaning towards a more planned pairings for the blocks. However when I sat down to do the sewing I went all random. Below here's a few blocks that I did.

I haven't quilted my table toppers yet but here you can see I have the top finished and I've already laid out my backing and batting. I can't decide what quilt pattern I should use, loopy lines or some form of echoing and straight lines.

Purple and Aqua Triangle Topper

I can't believe it was over a year ago that I posted this project. I had finished piecing it but never quilted it. Until recently I have been a bit shy with quilting on my home machine. You've seen me do straight lines with my walking foot but never free motion quilting. This is my third small project that I have done on my home machine. My quilting is called loopy line and it's probably more of a variation than a true design but I like it. I wasn't too fond of stippling I'm a girl who needs to cross the lines and break rules and this design allowed that freedom. Now all I need to do is add the binding.

I tried to get some close-ups of my stitching.

Here's a few photo's of the back side. I used matching thread in my bobbin so it really shows up on the white. My first two free motion  projects were with white thread so you couldn't see the mistakes. My quilting is far from perfect but I am so glad I have taken the leap into free motion. I wish I would have done this sooner.

Cherry Table Runner

I love this block it's so simple and uses up a lot of scraps you could easily make an awesome quilt with this pattern. For this runner I did the equivalent of two blocks plus a partial on each end. I did not have enough of these scraps to make a full third block and I'm kinda glad I didn't. I really like how this turned out instead. I've been a bit obsessed lately with runners and place-mats lately as you can see from my pin board.
Also this is my second free motion quilting project! Yay!

More Triangles

I have on my sewing block more equilateral triangles after stumbling across  this blog post (in Russian) and I thought wow this looks so cool I wonder how difficult it is and to my surprise not very. She's got great pictures which give you the gist of the block and when translated even better explanation on how to cut your triangles.
Here's how mine turned out from 2½" strips (we all have some of those right?)

 Here's a rough estimation of how the sizing turned out. This is my 12½" sq ruler and it pretty much fits that top to bottom but side to side it is about 2½" bigger tip to tip.

I liked how this turned out so much with these test scraps that I decided to try a bigger one this time I used fat quarters. I picked 6 different fabrics 3 purples and 3 teal/green. I ended up with quite a bit of left over material from the 4 inner fabrics but not much from the 2 outer fabrics. This could easily be a scrappy project just depending on how large you wanted to make it.

I cut 4½" wide strips out of my fat quarters I wanted to get the most I could out of each one remembering I am limited by the outer 2 colors.

This ended up measuring 27" from top to bottom and 31" tip to tip. Quite a bit bigger by just adding 2" to the size of my strips. This makes a great table topper size and even perhaps a small tree skirt. hmm.
