The ups and downs of adjustable straps

Recently I've been pattern making and with that I've been testing out adjustable straps. I first heard from my mother who frequently watches Nancy Zieman's show that you could make adjustable straps without any hardware. This idea greatly intrigued me and as she tried to explain the process and I tried to absorb through drawings how this was done. I was left curious and went to the internet to find more. I found a blog that sung accolades to Nancy and attempted to explain the process in pictures. I tried this process on the next bag I was making since I wanted my strap to go across the body and unfortunately it failed. The straps did not stay where I adjusted them, they worked they're way out to the farthest point as I walked. The bag that was snug to my body was now bouncing around my knee very awkwardly.
I don't want to call out this other blog but after my fail I reread her instructions to make sure I had followed them to the letter and even read down the comments and noticed other people had the same issues I was having with the straps. I searched Nancy's site with no answers or videos on this process.
I can only think that there must be something missing from the instructions, that perhaps this other blogger had miss interpreted the instructions. Without seeing Nancy's video myself I can't be sure.
I did however make a second bag and strap attempt making adjustments to the dimensions and after testing it at home I was almost certain that I had it figured out but when I took that bag out into the real world it also failed.
So I suppose in the end this post is about lessons learned. I think the next time I hear about  "adjustable fabric slides" or "no hardware adjustable straps" I will be cautious. The two bags I have already made I will have to top stitch the straps at my desired length to keep them in place. I'm still frustrated by this. But I am glad however that I tested on myself first and I didn't make any of these up as gifts I would have been mortified.

In case you were curious. First and second strap attempts...

Catching Up!

Wow, what a week. With Halloween fast approaching and so much happening this fall sometimes there is very little time for anything else. I have been busy at my sewing machine and many many hours at my computer writing my next pattern. The Clutch Wallet. I just finished writing all 27 pages jam packed with nearly (if not) 100 photos and step by step instructions. Whew! My eyeballs are a little tired. I still need to have my pattern tested so anyone interested in doing so let me know I would love the feedback.

Here's some picture's of my finished Clutch Wallet.

Throwback Thursday: How to fold an Old School Note

Start with a sheet of notebook paper and write your message...
Next fold down the upper right corner so that it meet the edge of the paper on the left side.
Now take the bottom right corner and bring it over to the bottom left corner. It should look like the photo below.
For the next step I like to flip the paper over.
And then fold the bottom up about 2½"
Then fold the top down to meet the bottom (this will be at that 2½" mark)
Now I like to flip the paper over again, it should look something like what you see below.
Now fold the top triangle tab down...
And tuck it under the existing diagonal fold. Now I think this looks upside down.
So I turn it to what I think should be right side up. Now you can add your TO: and FROM:
And if your nice or you think your recipient might have trouble opening this note you can leave a little tale sticking out on that last step.
Have fun writing notes. This sure reminded me of Junior high but I think I may just write a few notes for old times sake.

Do you remember these notes?

Fresh New Look

Hi Everyone!
With this new chapter in my life and my excitement with publishing my patterns on Craftsy I have decided to give my blog a fresh new look.

Onward! I have decided on a name change since I am not as of yet established as a Craftsy seller. "Cat on my Quilt" came to me from looking at old photographs of my cat Mrs. Kitty, she has since passed but there are several pictures of her laying on my quilts as I am trying to make them. This memory warms my heart and so I named my blog and designs in honor of her.
This quilt I was trying to pin baste and she wanted to be right in the action and maybe some attention. Or perhaps because I laid something out on the floor she felt she had claim to lay on it. Either way she was my sewing buddy and I will miss her dearly.

A Ghastlie Begining

I have finally decided on a design for my Ghastlie fabrics I wanted to showcase the different images and scenes and this is what I settled on. I attempted to fussy-cut 4 scenes from each of my 4 different character fabrics and framed them with coordinating fabrics from my stash.

Here's a preview of the first 8 I have done. Each will have matching corner triangles and framing triangles this will help tie in all the blocks.

Do you have any Ghastlie fabrics? If so what do you plan on making?

I have collected these over many different trips to the fabric store as well as over the years. I love these characters and the stories they tell. You can see all of Alexander Henry's Ghastlies on his site. Here. Most of the different designs come with a background of either natural(Lt. Tea), gray(smoke), Deadly Mauve or Mold Green. I just love these names.

Patterns...

Hi Everyone! Writing a pattern can be a very time consuming but rewarding process. There is a lot of thought and planning that goes into making a successful pattern. I love teaching and showing others how to make things and sometimes this can be difficult to translate onto paper. I have worked really hard to make this an easy to follow pattern with good instructions to insure your completion success. Please check out my pattern on Craftsy I would love to hear feedback. Let me know if I missed anything. What do you think? I want to hear it.
